Apply by October 20 to Host a Free Trick-or-Streets Block Celebration

A diverse group of people, many in Halloween costumes, gather under large trees along a residential street for a community celebration.

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is offering free permits for Trick-or-Streets block celebrations, a program designed to help neighbors celebrate Halloween and Día de Muertos together. Applications are due by October 20, 2026, and approved events can take place between October 21 and November 2.

How It Works

Residents can close their street for up to three consecutive blocks, provided cross streets remain open to through traffic. Street closures can last until 10 PM. If your event extends past dusk, you must use reflective tape on barricades and signs, communicate the closure to neighbors in advance, and station an adult monitor at each block end.

How to Apply

Submit a simple registration form at SDOT’s website or call (206) 684-7623 for assistance. Free interpreters are available. If your street is already a Healthy Street with existing barricades and closure signs, you do not need additional permits—just follow SDOT’s street-closure checklist and notify neighbors of your planned activity.
