Seattle Updates Small Business Handbook with Free Tools and Resources for Queen Anne Entrepreneurs

Seattle’s Office of Economic Development has released an updated Small Business Handbook designed to help entrepreneurs navigate the process of starting, growing, or closing a business in the city. The comprehensive guide brings together free tools, programs, checklists, and resources in one accessible location.

The handbook addresses a key challenge for small business owners: removing barriers that can cause delays, add costs, and impact survival during the critical first 24 months of operations. According to Michael Wells, the city’s small business advocate, the goal is to help business owners focus on growth rather than administrative hurdles.

The handbook is available in eight languages—Amharic, Chinese, English, Korean, Somali, Spanish, Tagalog, and Vietnamese—reflecting Seattle’s diverse small business community. Key sections include starting a business, regulations and requirements at city, county, state, and federal levels, permits and inspections, operating and growing your business, and closing a business.

Resources highlighted include Seattle Public Library’s Library to Business program, which offers free classes, workshops, and support from business librarians. The handbook also points to programs offering free legal advice, financial consulting, business development support, and faster permitting. Industry-specific resources and networking opportunities with other business owners are included to help build community connections.
